STORY ONE @ KING TUT'S
1ST JUNE 2005
I walked round to the stage and the first thing I noticed was that the
vocalist looked a hell of a lot like Kelly Jones (Stereophonics).
He was singing a mellow little tune and holding something in his arm,
and as I was just starting to sway along to this band's soft rock style
sound, the drums got a bit heavier, the bass a bit harder, the electric
guitar a bit faster and BANG, the vocalist whips out a violin from behind
his back and started playing it as though his life depended on it. I
was stunned - not at all did I see that coming. I looked round and everyone's
jaws were on the floor, and that was it, everyone was hooked.
As well as looking like the guy from Stereophonics, the band's sound
was a little like theirs too, with a bit of Radiohead and a little psychedelia
thrown in there too. And I'm sure I heard the name Bob Dylan from somewhere
in the crowd as well.
So, this is STORY ONE, a four piece from Nottingham, whose sound is so
full and rich you would think there were at least 7 musicians on stage
that night.
I got a copy of their EP and had a wee listen. Although the CD is really
good (so good it's on my mp3 player now), you just have to see these
guys live to appreciate their talent: so, if you live in Glasgow, Swansea,
Middlesbrough or Derby, grab some tickets now and go see them.
And, if you're going to see Amy Winehouse on 3rd July in Cardiff then
you can catch them there, as they're supporting her in St David's Hall.
