Rost @The Vale, Glasgow
18th June 2005
When this band asked me along to review their gig they told me they were
a 5 piece Grunge band.
Now, Grunge is a genre I've given no thought to in my life, at all. So,
I made my way along to their gig not knowing what to expect ( I suppose
I could have looked into it, but hey, that’s too much like hard
work ).
So, I’m kinda expecting thrashing drums, screeching guitars and
a lot of shouting. But what I got instead was something totally different.
As soon as the band came on I thought to myself, Joy Division. It wasn't
so much for their sound as it was their frontman’s vocal style
and rigid movements.
Their sound changed totally all the way through their set, some songs
quite rocky, some quite jazzy and loungey, and as they are a grunge band
I'm guessing they sounded grungey too.
The thing I loved about this band was the way each member got the chance
to come forward and show their talent with solo parts.
There was a song nearer the end with what must have been about a 2 minute
guitar solo, which was amazing - it was a piece Clapton would have been
proud of.
And as for the drummer, I could sit and watch him all night long. This
guy's got some serious energy and talent and you could see he was having
a ball.
I said before about their style changing throughout their set, and this
was mainly due to the varied funky percussion sounds and sequences.
Of all the gigs I've been to recently, when a band has actually managed
to get the crowd moving it has just been some head bobbin' and heel tappin',
but this band actually managed to get the girls at the back of the room
moving. I'm not just talking small movements, I'm talking ACTUAL DANCING.
So, well done on that and well done on an exciting performance.
I'm sure we'll see you guys again in the near future.
