Problem with blogging is that you can't do it from your car. That's where most of my coherent, or random, thinking is done anyway. So, driving between here and Edinburgh on the way to drop off the new is this music? into shops there, I find myself trawling the past, via a cassette tape (remember them?) since I am using the missus' car as she requires mine to transport a PA. 'Indie City' was sold via the NME, in the days when it was good, and covers the good old days when music was ideologically sound rather than manufactured - you don't get bands who fail to play in tune with such aplomb any more, but The Mekons defined the term 'shambling' in 1978. The tape is definitely 'esoteric' (managed to get that and 'aplomb' in the same paragraph) - most notably, Orange Juice, Aztec Camera and Motorhead all within a few tracks of each other, and guessing what's coming next is highly entertaining (Colourbox's 'World Cup Theme', as it happens).
The rocking vicar newsletter has been exploring 'single use' songwords recently and I wil have to submit 'parallelogram', as espoused by Lemmy on Motorhead's eponymous toon. It also features perhaps the most contrived rhyme - coupling the squinty 4-sided geometric shape with 'marathon'. The fact that the sentence context is "we're moving like a parallelogram" makes it doubly unlikely, and only excused by the fact that the song is written about, and presumably on, Class A drugs.
I'm off to Winchburgh to pick up some speaker stands in a minute, and volume 2 will be in the tape player...
